November 2026
The HAUC(UK) Road to Net Zero (RTNZ) project is moving forward with its next phase, building on the research, tools and resources developed to date, with a renewed focus on helping the street works and road works sectors put that knowledge into practice.
The next phase will place greater emphasis on practical application, industry engagement and encouraging wider adoption of the approaches and tools developed through the project.
With sustainability, resilience and efficiency increasingly important considerations for organisations responsible for the UK's road and utility infrastructure, Road to Net Zero aims to help organisations make better-informed decisions about how works are planned and delivered.
The project has evolved beyond a focus on carbon reduction alone. Its whole systems-based approach considers the wider environmental, social and economic impacts of street works and road works, recognising that better planning and decision-making can deliver multiple benefits, including reduced disruption, lower costs and resource demands, improved resilience and better outcomes for communities.
Moving from theory to practice
The next phase of Road to Net Zero will focus on turning the evidence, research and tools developed through the project into practical action across the HAUC community.
A key priority will be helping organisations understand how existing resources, including the Carbon Emissions Evaluator and Impact360, can support everyday planning and decision-making.
The project will also look to build on its existing work through practical guidance, education and training, alongside greater engagement with regional HAUCs and other industry forums.
Working more closely with practitioners will provide opportunities to share knowledge, understand the challenges organisations face and gather feedback to help shape future developments.
Looking ahead
Road to Net Zero will continue to support the wider ambitions of HAUC Vision 2030, helping the street works and road works sectors become more sustainable, resilient and efficient.
As the project moves into its next phase, the emphasis will be on encouraging practical change, supporting organisations in making better-informed decisions and demonstrating how a whole systems-based approach can deliver lasting benefits for the industry and the communities it serves.
